Course Introduction

Welcome from Dr. Loy Ehlers

Dr. Loy Ehlers introduces the course, explains why AI literacy is now a professional requirement for paralegals, and walks you through what to expect in each module.

Why This Course Exists

AI tools are available to anyone with an internet connection, and the pressure to use them is real. But the guidance available to legal professionals on how to use these tools responsibly, effectively, and within the bounds of their professional obligations has not kept pace with the technology.

โ€” Preface, The AI-Powered Paralegal

This course closes that gap. Every technique here came from a real paralegal task. Every verification workflow was built in response to a real failure mode. The professional responsibility framework is drawn directly from the ABA Model Rules, NALA canons, and emerging bar guidance.

By the end of this course, you will not just know about AI โ€” you will know how to use it in real legal work, responsibly and effectively.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of The AI-Powered Paralegal, you will be able to:

  • 1 Explain how large language models work, including training, knowledge cutoffs, and hallucination risk, using language appropriate for legal professional contexts.
  • 2 Apply the ABA Model Rules 1.1, 1.6, and 3.3 โ€” and NALA/NFPA codes โ€” to evaluate appropriate AI use in paralegal practice.
  • 3 Construct effective AI prompts using the RCTFC framework (Role, Context, Task, Format, Constraints) and adapt them across legal task types.
  • 4 Execute the Six-Step AI-Assisted Research Workflow for legal research while applying the Cite and Flag verification method.
  • 5 Apply the Three-Pass Workflow (Draft, Review, Refine) to AI-generated legal documents, including all six major document types.
  • 6 Distinguish between volume work and judgment work in case management, and deploy AI appropriately for each category.
  • 7 Draft professional client communications using plain language techniques, tone calibration, and AI-assisted translation, without rendering legal advice.
  • 8 Identify the key AI use cases, risk factors, and verification requirements for at least four legal practice areas.
  • 9 Build a personal AI toolkit by selecting appropriate tools for specific legal tasks, establishing privacy protocols, and maintaining a personal prompt library.
  • 10 Evaluate the evolving attorney-paralegal-AI relationship and position yourself as an AI-fluent paralegal through a strategic professional development plan.
